Faces of Our Future: Meet Gabriel Mathura

Gabriel Mathura Intern Highlight HEROGabriel Mathura, New Frontier Data 2025 Summer Intern

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you're currently studying or pursuing?

I’m currently studying Software Engineering at the University of Leicester, where I’m building my skills in programming, problem-solving, and system design. Outside of academics, I enjoy reading, as well as playing the double bass, which lets me tap into my creative side. I’m also an avid sailor, which has taught me patience, focus, and how to adapt quickly when conditions change.

What inspired you to apply for the Enterprise Cayman Summer Internship Programme, and specifically with New Frontier Data SEZC?

I was looking for a summer internship that would not only strengthen my CV but also give me the chance to earn some extra income during the break. Enterprise Cayman's internship programme with New Frontier Data was actually the very first company I came across and it immediately caught my attention. I applied right away, and I’m so glad I did.

What new skills or knowledge have you gained during your internship that you feel will be valuable moving forward?

During my internship, I had the opportunity to work extensively with the Pandas Python library and Snowflake database platform, which really expanded my technical skill set.

I also deepened my expertise in Excel, far more than I expected. I went in thinking I already knew my way around it, but I was surprised at just how much more there was to learn and how powerful it could be in real-world projects.

How was your overall experience?

Overall, my experience has been fantastic. I’ve learned so much in a short time, and the support from the New Frontier Data team has made all the difference. Everyone has been welcoming, collaborative, and genuinely invested in helping me grow. It’s been a great environment to work in.

Can you describe your role and main responsibilities during the internship?

As an intern, my main responsibilities centered around supporting the team with data collection and analysis. One of my key projects involved gathering and aggregating foot traffic data to support a pitch we were preparing, a task that gave me valuable insight into how data can drive strategic decision-making. I also contributed by verifying location information in our database, helping ensure the accuracy and reliability of our datasets.

How did this internship align with your career goals?

I know I want to build my career in the computer science industry, but I haven’t committed to a specific area within the field yet. This internship gave me the chance to explore data analytics firsthand, an area I was curious about but hadn’t experienced in a real-world setting before. It’s been a great way to see if this could be the path I want to pursue long-term.

Do you believe your placement with New Frontier Data SEZC will lead you to more opportunities? Why?

Yes, definitely. Garry Allen, the CEO, went out of his way to connect us with various local businesses so we could see firsthand how they use data in their operations. Those introductions not only broadened my understanding of the industry but also helped me start building a professional network — something that could open doors to future opportunities.

How did your internship challenge you to grow and improve?

As someone who’s naturally reserved, this internship really encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. I developed stronger professional skills, especially in communication and teamwork, by collaborating closely with others on data-driven projects. The experience also humbled me; I gained a deep appreciation for the challenges and nuances of collecting, cleaning, and interpreting real-world data. It wasn’t just about learning new tool, it was about learning how to work effectively with people and solve problems together.
