AI for Learning: Avoiding the Pitfalls

Wednesday, 13 May 2026 • Signal House off Fairbanks Road • 5:30pm Doors Open • Free Admission
with Stephen Ta'Bois, STEM Specialist for the Department of Education Services (DES)

Education, as with nearly all aspects of our lives, is being significantly impacted by the now widely available range of Generative AI tools. Although there is a lot of potential for improving the outcomes for young people, there are also many pitfalls that we need to be aware of.

When considering education, it’s about the method and journey to answering questions and demonstrating understanding, rather than just getting the correct answer. If an answer is at your fingertips, what is the value in getting stuck?

This workshop will cover:

  • Understanding ethical use of AI
  • How to leverage AI for learning from the perspective of educators, students and parents/guardians using some practical tools and examples.
  • The importance of critical thinking when evaluating both content and responses to ensure we know what is trustworthy.
  • The key differences between encouraging a creating vs consuming culture when it comes to technology.

What to expect:

  • Using practical AI tools and real-life examples
  • Some simple dos and don’t to support your children/students
  • Guidelines on how to teach and use critical thinking skills
